About This Podcast
Quest Youth Radio: Over 45 Years Strong
Quest Youth Radio (QYR) is a media training program for high school and college students. Developed by community activists and Quest Ink founders, Cliff and Joyce Carter, the program was created as part of their outreach efforts to help rebuild Newark, NJ, following the riots.
The program is designed to provide young people with alternatives and support for their continuing education. Our team members have gone on to become business owners, educators, community leaders, and more.
Quest's Community Vibrations Radio Show is produced by Quest Youth Radio. It has been broadcasting from Seton Hall University’s "Pirate Radio," 89.5 FM in South Orange, NJ, since 1978.
About the Team
Program Coordinator
Mr. Richard Barnes-Bey is an educator and community activist. The Newark, NJ native is a graduate of Seton Hall University and has been facilitating the radio program for over 30 years.
Program Impact and History
Did You Know? Quest Youth Radio was one of the first radio shows to play hip-hop in New Jersey.
Over the years, the show has become more diverse, including R&B and Jazz in its playlist. And while some things change, greatness remains: the segments used by students today are the same segments designed by Mr. Carter over 45 years ago. These segments allow students to present structured information about people or events that affect their community. Overall, students gain valuable skills in broadcasting, writing, public speaking, marketing, and more.
Get Involved
We are currently accepting broadcast students and "Correspondents" for training. Correspondents are those who are unable to come to the studio; they can submit footage, interviews, and pictures to be a part of the Quest Youth Radio experience. All participants must go through broadcast training.
We look forward to hearing from you!
